Peter Ablinger:
WEISS / WEISSLICH 17d
Flöte und Rauschen

Flute:
- choose 6 different pitches in different registers of your instrument
- choose an order of the 6
- play each tone for the lenght of a breath
- let a pause of about equal lenght between each tone

Noise:
Each tone is enveloped by the same (bandpass-filtered, pink) noise. Beginn and end exactly with the flute. Also fade in and out with a similar shape as the flute tone's attacc and release.

Example:

> Download noise (Pink noise, bandpass-filtered: 270-1760 Hz, 3rd order filter, 30", Mono, Wav, 2,5MB)

Ballance:
The flute tone is still audible but in the background.
The noise is roomfilling and foreground.

Alternatives:
If you choose other pitches as in the given example (- crucial is only the highest and the lowest pitch), or another flute (piccolo, alto-flute, bass-flute), you may create the apropriate noise by yourself, according to the highest and lowest pitch (- taking in account only the basis frequency of a pitch and not the harmonics).

Use Pink Noise, bandpass-filter it by the frequencies of your chosen highest and lowest tone. Make shure that the order of filter is not very high (3rd order) and the slopes are not too steep.

In case you want to play the same score as in the example with other flutes the bandpass would be limited by:

Picc
Alto-Fl
Bass-Fl
low cutoff
(in Hz)
585
220
145
high cutoff
(in Hz)
3520
1300
880
